Reviewing wave speed in a pressure profile

Step-by-step guide

When performing a surge analysis in InfoSurge Pro, wave speed plays a critical role. This example highlights the importance of wave speed and the impact it has on surge analysis results.

  1. Double-click the desired project .aprx file to open ArcGIS Pro.
  2. Click the InfoWater Pro tab to open the InfoWater Pro ribbon.
  3. In the Project panel, click Initialize.

First, run a surge analysis and view the results caused by a specific wave speed:

  1. From the Model Explorer, InfoSurge toolbar, click Run Manager.
  2. In the Run Manager, switch to the Surge tab.
  3. Change the Global Wave Speed to 4504.3 feet per second.

This assigns the same wave speed to all pipes simultaneously.

  1. Click Run to perform a surge analysis.
  2. When the run is complete, click OK to close the Run Manager.
  3. From the InfoWater Pro ribbon, View panel, click Report Manager.
  4. In the Report Manager, click New.
  5. In the Output Report/Graph dialog box, under Available Output Source, select *Active*:Surge.
  6. From the Graph Report tab, pick Surge Node Graph.
  7. In the Data Scope group box, make sure that Selected Element(s) is enabled.

  1. Click Open.
  2. In the map, click and drag to select Junction 11. Its pressure profile opens in the Report Manager dialog box.
  3. Click Report to switch to a table view of the results.
  4. To view the highest recorded pressure, right-click the Pressure column header and pick Sort Descending.

In this example, the highest value is 152.54 psi.

  1. After reviewing the results, click Hide to close the Report Manager.
  2. Open the Run Manager again, and adjust the Global Wave Speed to 1375.8 feet per second.

  1. Click Run to perform another simulation.
  2. Reopen the Report Manager, and click Refresh All to refresh and review the results.

Note the effect of the change in Global Wave Speed on the pressure profile of Junction 11. The maximum recorded pressure is down to 127.52 psi.
