This class describes several Building Information Modeling (BIM) challenges that Nikken Sekkei, the largest Japanese design firm, and Takenaka Corporation, one of the top five contractor, design-build companies, faced during their collaboration on a 1,000,000-square-foot BIM hospital project. The class covers three major challenges in the BIM implementation and adoption process between the two companies: how to incorporate the new concept of hospital design with a BIM approach that supports design coordination of the "shell and core" of the hospital plan to reduce RFIs; how to manage all of the designers and drafters who are beginning Autodesk® Revit® software users (no BIM champions) to produce construction documents from design development phase; and how to manage design review communications with the client using visualization technology. The class will cover each of the solutions and their benefits as profitable outputs using Autodesk Revit, Autodesk® 3ds Max®, and Autodesk® Navisworks® software.

In this presentation, we will discuss a case study of an ongoing $1.7 billion convention center project and see how a virtual design and construction (VDC)-heavy workflow combined with a design-assist process focused on collaboration in the preconstruction phase helped identify and resolve mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design issues. We will talk about the co-location process used on the project and the value and benefits it provided all project stakeholders.

In this session, we'll examine how many in the construction industry are moving away from paper and traditional quality assurance, quality control, and collaboration methods in favor of common data environment solutions such as BIM 360 Docs software. We'll cover what exactly BIM 360 Docs software is, and how it works as a cloud-based program and a mobile app. We'll not only look at the benefits, but also at the current drawbacks of working with this workflow. We'll also spend time on basic workflows and best practices for working with BIM 360 Docs. Anybody who is serious about Building Information Modeling (BIM) knows there is more to BIM than the data stored in the model. The more involved the BIM implementation becomes, the more important it becomes to store information in an external database. Autodesk Navisworks software is primarily a collaboration tool and as such presents unique challenges and unique opportunities over authoring tools. Taking full advantage of a database can automate coordination tasks, improve communication, tighten collaboration, enhance 4D and 5D simulations and create a much more enhanced overall BIM experience. Passing data between applications is easy, but finding the proper strategy for implementation is critical for success. This class will outline several opportunities for connecting Navisworks to a database as well as identify the key elements of a successful implementation strategy.

Have you ever asked why clash detection is one of the most common terms in regards to BIM and VDC? Every person who has worked on an intelligent model in the past 10 years has more than likely been a part of a clash detection session. Navisworks software finds problems among various types of intelligent models by visually displaying them, and has been adapted by numerous contracting firms as a standard practice for coordination. But how can lean principles be applied to turn clash detection into planned coordination, where little or no clashes exist from the beginning? Rodgers has spent years breaking down the traditional clash process in an attempt to eliminate as much process waste as possible. We will show a systematic approach to discipline coordination and how you can modify it for your project. We’ll also show how the lean practice of pull planning is used in the development of coordination schedules. This lean approach reduces cost and time, leading to an efficient way of approaching the clash detection mentality.

The purpose of this class is to capitalize on captured drone data for underground coordination with AutoCAD software and Revit data utilizing Navisworks Manage software.

Collaboration in construction is challenging. How can you organize the quality in data and geometry with all these different parties and models? Which software do you use to check your model: Navisworks or Solibri. An IFC workflow with Solibri provides you insights in the different clashes and the possibility to check in a rule based manner. But how do you create reports and collaborate with team members? Does Navisworks manage a more better workflow with more possibilities for everybody? With Navisworks you are free of file format. It is easy to append and update Revit, IFC, rcp or dwg files to a federated model in one single file. Checking model geometry, duplicates and data in a standardized way with Collaborea. It is the rulebased modelchecker for Naviswork. A report is no longer necessary because all the issues are visible and editable on a Cloud platform using Autodesk Forge. This class will review new functionality in Moldflow Insight software and discuss current research directions in the development of Moldflow Insight software. Capabilities covered will include multi-shot overmolding and mold cooling; composite overmolding; the effect of fiber orientation on viscosity; the effect of material degradation on viscosity; microcellular foaming; improved fiber orientation and fiber breakage calculations; and user routines for viscosity, core-shift and more. There will also be an update of research collaborations in the area of injection molding simulation research.

Revit intelligent models provide great metrics and the tools to manage them for most standard customer needs. However, in some specific workflows (for example, estimating and construction planning), despite the precise physical model, using original elements and/or parts, some crucial and accurate metrics may not be available via standard parameters and tools. In this class, the presenter will share many such examples and Revit API solutions for each, gained throughout his extensive career in the Autodesk DevCon and Consulting Divisions. Most specifically, he will present some findings gained during the last 3 years of intensive collaboration with Vinci Construction, together with their BIM developers. Solutions and some sample code will be provided for areas from specific small tasks (more-precise material takeoff from layered walls, metrics for all parts, metrics for “gross” walls, and so on) to more-extensive solution frameworks, such as custom parameters development and management based on custom abstract API classes.

Who says trades and subcontractors are technologically averse? On the contrary, the usage of technology is relatively common among many subcontractors and proven to deliver high value to a project. Capitalizing on the BIM 360 platform with other technology such as field data collection and labor productivity tools increases information flow to facilitate better collaboration and transparency on the project. When subcontractors utilize construction technology, there is a decrease in RFIs, waste, schedule, and final construction costs. This presentation will take a deep dive into the subcontractor-based workflow of several MEP contractors including GCATS, Dynalectric, and Pacific Rim Mechanical. We’ll explore how a subcontractor’s use of BIM 360 Docs software and eSUB has improved collaboration between the field and the office and provided a single source of truth into field productivity for transparency and communication between specialty trades, general contractors, and other key stakeholders in the design-build process.

Tool customization, automation, data mining, and design iteration exploration are a few examples of why you should learn to code in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. Coding includes the use of text-based languages such as Python or C#, or visual programming environments such as Dynamo and Grasshopper. With the use of these tools come additional methodologies that we need to learn, such as version control or Git. You've probably heard of this process through GitHub, which is a version control platform (Dynamo is hosted on GitHub). Essentially, version control lets you manage revisions regarding your code. The problem with Git (version control) is that this process isn't introduced in a way that makes the most sense to a Revit user. That is where this class comes in: We’ll introduce the process and key terms, and explain why version control matters to you. After this class, attendees will have an introductory understanding of how to use Git, and will be able to manage their files using a version control process.
